I found that some of postgrad students can’t really speak & write English very well. I’ve an experience where my colleague, an Iranian postgrad, to be honest, was brutally bashed by journal reviewers pertaining to his bad English writing. This may reflect that Malaysian universities are producing students of poor quality. I think it’s ok if they can at least speak & write average English, but not THAT poor. I am not sure what is the criteria used by UTM during the international student selections, as for locals, they’ve to achieve MUET of band 3 minimum. Perhaps, UTM should increase the English proficiency among the students especially the postgrads in order to boost the research writing quality.
